Online Shopping: Benefits and Disadvantages

In Latin America, it has been possible to make purchases online for years and there are more and more national and international companies that offer their items or sales services through internet portals.

One excellent example of an online store that has become highly successful is Weshine, however, for many people, this type of transaction is still mysterious and even intimidating, since the absence of face-to-face personnel to advise them seems dangerous.

According to the most recent study by the Latin American Chamber of Electronic Commerce, in one country 76% of Internet users have made purchases online at least once in their lives, and since 2016, online purchases annually fluctuate around 26,000 dollars, a considerably positive figure, since it represents a growth of more than 60% in the last two years.

This phenomenon has been possible thanks to the fact that more and more merchants dare to migrate to digital platforms and launch their products in this market, either exclusively or as a complement to physical stores in traditional format.

In the same way, perhaps you have noticed that today many bureaucratic processes, consultations and payments of multiple natures must be made online, so that, in a certain way, it is difficult to disassociate yourself from this activity. Whether individually or asking for help from a digital user, we have all had to make purchases online. If you doubt it, think of that time you had to pay for the certificate of freedom of your house on a notary website, or that time when your son booked a hotel using his credit card to take advantage of the discount they offered for a limited time.

The five great benefits of online shopping

   1. Competitive prices and discounts:

Probably the first attribute regular internet shoppers will tell you about is price, as significantly cheaper products are available online. And although it does not happen in all cases, it is common. There are companies that manage different prices on the internet to promote sales in this space, which you will not be able to find in their physical stores.

In addition, the companies that operate in Latin America have taken models of discount seasons that existed abroad, such as Black Friday, which according to figures provided by PayU, the platform for selling and receiving payments online, during the three days of Black Friday promotions in 2017 saw more than one million transactions, which represented a milestone for regional commerce.

   2. Security:

Although for many this could be seen as a disadvantage, it is actually a strength of online shopping. Since trajectory stores manage security software that protects financial information and does not allow it to be stolen at any time. This is reflected in the statistics, because according to the CCCE, the level of fraud for internet purchases in Colombia is 0.45%, below other Latin American countries such as Peru (0.52%) or Mexico (1.5%).

However, what you must keep in mind when making purchases online is that you must take the necessary precautions indicated by banks and control agencies, such as accessing your bank accounts online by typing the web address yourself in the search engine or never providing information outside the authorized platforms.

In addition, shopping online can be much safer than doing it physically, since you do not have to transport large sums of money, but by accessing your personal electronic devices you can buy almost anything with a couple of clicks.

  1. Availability and home deliveries:

Surely it has ever happened to you that you needed to buy something and when you arrived at the store, it was closed. Another advantage of shopping online is that the stores are always open, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without queuing, and accessed from anywhere in the world.

Although this sounds like a television commercial, it is true and it is one of the main strengths of the digital market since no matter how much time you have you can make purchases and, in addition, receive them at your home or office. Therefore, you also do not have to worry about looking for transportation to carry items that are perhaps large or heavy and, in many cases, you do not have to cancel any added value for this service.

In addition, you should not worry about the conditions in which the shipment arrives, since the seller must guarantee the quality and integrity of the products since the good reputation of their brand and work depends on other buyers becoming customers since all opinions are shared on the internet, which we will talk about in the next point.

  1. Easy to compare and have recommendations:

It is often said that the best way to advertise is by having good recommendations; Well, on the Internet this principle of popular wisdom becomes more accurate than ever since buyers often share their experiences on blogs, forums, or in the spaces for writing reviews that are located just below the product catalogs.

Therefore, if a seller is not good, delivers a product in poor condition, sends a different item than the one ordered or it did not meet the buyer’s expectations, surely many people will know and think twice before considering buying.

One of the clearest examples of this digital behavior occurs when, for example, someone wants to go on vacation and searches the internet for different accommodation options. In most specialized portals, users can see and compare prices, services, and reviews of people who have already stayed in hotels; reading real and uncensored reviews that can clearly give you a more detailed idea of what you are going to find in this place, all this before you pay.

   5. Variety of products:

When shopping online you can access products that are not common or that are not yet available in physical stores in your country through exclusive internet pre-sales. In addition, it is possible to make online purchases of products that have not yet been launched in the country and import them, either for your personal use or even to resell them. In any case, with this you will be more updated than the users of the conventional national market.

Disadvantages of shopping online

  1. It is not possible to try the product before buying it:

Although this qualifies as a disadvantage, since buying something online is taking a vote of confidence, there is an alternative that counteracts this aspect, and that is that, as we mentioned before, you can look for reviews from previous customers who have already tried the product and they share their experience.

  1. Internet dependence:

Certainly, making use of a secure internet connection is essential to make purchases, and at the same time, it is necessary to have a personal electronic device that allows it, since it is not advisable to make transactions through public equipment.

  1. Inconvenience to make returns:

Although sales portals on the web generally have online or telephone support and advice channels, sometimes it can be inconvenient to make a claim or return a product, since time and sometimes money must be invested to achieve it. especially when it has been purchased abroad. However, it is legally stipulated that sellers must always offer guarantees and answers for the products or the money.
